Gion Junior High School Hiroshima Japan

Sometimes the power of emotions can lead to great and wonderful things. And that’s exactly what happened at Gion JHS in Hiroshima, Japan in mid March of this year, 2009.

Over the course of three days, the often lively and curious students at this inner city junior high school became inspired and compelled to make a difference. In a matter of two weeks an idea was conceived and a plan of action was carried out.

The whole thing was somewhat spontaneous and I now have around 400 hundred pencils, 150 pens, 30-40 notebooks, 15 erasers, 10 pencil cases and some other miscellaneous items to send over.

The outcomes were multiple. Not only did we collect an amazing amount of stationary for St. Michael’s school in Njongon, Gambia, but more importantly, the students at Gion JHS became aware of world vastly different than their own.

With the help of Maya Coxon at Twin Communities, a large box of pens, pencils, notebooks and goodwill will shortly arrive in Gambia. This small gesture carries significant meaning. Quite simply, it lets the students at St. Michaels know that someone somewhere is thinking of them.
