I visited Bafaluto village in October 2008 to see the results of PING’s project there which includes a borehole, water tower and market garden for the community.

In the ten months since the clean water supply was switched on at the end of 2007, the village had used 4 millions litres of water from the borehole. The people of the village told me their stories of how the quality of their lives had tremendously improved over these months.

The women folk no longer had to spend several hours each day fetching water from the nearest well and finding firewood to boil the water. They were now able to tend their plots in the market garden, growing new varieties of produce such as courgettes, chillies, lettuce and corn, as well as the staples of ground nuts and onions. Enough for their families and also to sell in the town, bringing in much needed additional household income.

Mothers were happy their children were healthier thanks to the clean water. The kids didn’t become sick as often so they were more regular

in their school attendance. This freed up time for the mothers to do more for their families.

According to the Chief, the combined income of the village had increased three-fold in just a year.

Local buses and taxis now pass through Bafaluto as the villagers can afford the fare to the town whereas previously they would walk. People are moving to Bafaluto from other villages as word of the community’s increasing prosperity get around.

Here are some pictures of my visit to Bafaluto.
