At the end of 2008, I decided to support PING in a proposed bee-keeping project in the Gambia. The idea being that the project would be "owned" and run by the village and provide a fund to cover costs such as the maintenance of the water system, etc. The aim is for the villages to be self-sufficient once these projects are up and running.


Bee-keeping is an activity that has relatively low set-up costs and can easily be adopted by the villagers with just a little training;  providing many advantages, such as:

 

 
The building of the hives is now underway and I will be travelling to the Gambia to meet with PING in March 2009 to see how the project is progressing and learn more about how we can work with the villagers for lasting improvements to their quality of life.
