Water Facts

• 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This equates to 1 in 8 of the world’s population.

• 1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to 5000 deaths a day.

•The average person in the developing world only uses 10 litres of water each day for their drinking, washing & cooking. (WSCC)

The average European uses 200 litres of water every day, with North Americans using 400 litres. (HDR 2006)

 

•The weight of water that women in Africa commonly carry on their heads is 20kgs - this is the same the average baggage allowance on an international flight.

• 40 billion working hours are spent carrying water each year in Africa.

• Households in rural Africa spend on average 26% of their time fetching water. It is generally the women who are burdened with this task.

• 443 million school days are lost each year due to water related Diseases.
