For years I wanted to "do something" to make a difference to the lives of the world's poorest communities, but I couldn't see how I could help or where to start.
Eventually I decided that small local action was better than doing nothing, so we held a "Stand Up Against Poverty" event at my daughters' school in October 2006.
The idea for Twin Communities grew from there. Since then the link between Sarratt and Shyogwe, Rwanda has grown and the school children are now sponsoring a Rwandan child.
A request from another local community wanting to "get involved" has resulted in Twin Communities working with PING (People In Need, Gambia). Click here to read more about their highly effective work with communities in need in the Gambia.

I had been looking to set up a project of my own for some time that ticked all my values boxes and focussed on direct support of people in Africa and Asia.
In October 2008 I travelled to Gambia, after hearing how PING Charity had brought a new lease of life to the village of Bafaluto by establishing a clean water supply for the community and helping to set up a market
garden.
I wanted to see for myself what PING had accomplished in just two years, and meet the people behind the charity, Brian Harrold & Pamela
Morgan, to find out how they had gone about things. Click here to Read more about my visit to Gambia.
I returned home to Cyprus, moved by my experience in Gambia and also inspired to help other villages have access to clean water and become as self sufficient as possible. But how?
A chat about the Gambia trip with the owner of my local health club led to the idea
of Cycle For Gambia -
Cyprus in November 2009 to raise £60,000 for PING Charity’s next clean water supply project.
This just naturally linked into Twin Communities, a project my sister, Maya, has been developing.
I have now joined forces with Maya and our big event for Twin Communities this year

Martin Deane
Martin has been a key element of
Twin Communities from almost the start, in 2006, when he made Maya's vision of a short inspirational Twin Communities film a reality. Click here to see the 4 minute film.
More recently, Martin has built and helped to design this website. We are very grateful that he has given his time and expertise completely free of charge, which enables us to give 100% of all donated funds to the communities in need.
